The Children's Annex Receives Another Honor
SUNY New Paltz, in partnership with The Children's Annex, is one of 17 New York State colleges and universities to receive a grant from the New York State Education Department to "Develop and Deliver Undergraduate, Graduate and In-service Courses relating to the Education of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders". SUNY New Paltz was the only institute of higher learning in the Mid-Hudson Valley to receive this award for course development. The Children's Annex will be the Content Specialist for SUNY New Paltz in writing the course curriculum. The Children's Annex has been assisting children with autism through out the Mid-Hudson Valley for 26 years. "We are excited to be collaborating with SUNY New Paltz in the development of this much needed resource." said Jamey Wolff, Co-Founder and Program Director of The Children's Annex. The course Educating Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders was offered in the Spring of 2003 and is being offered again in Spring 2004 beginning January 28th at the Children's Annex in Kingston, NY. This is the second award The Annex has received from the New York State Education Department. In 2000, the Annex received a $10,000 grant acknowledging our effective practices in instructional programs for students with disabilities. The Children's Annex produced a video and booklets available free of charge to school districts that want to integrate students with moderate to severe disabilities into a regular classroom setting based on The Children's Annex model. "The video highlights the process we use to select students and place them in neighborhood schools and how we cooperate with school districts to work in the best interests of the child. It also focuses on developing an interdisciplinary dialogue with staff and administrators and how school district staff are trained to modify their teaching, equipment and curriculum," Wolff said. "We break down the integration process into incremental steps individualized for each child and school district." |
