Recognition that each child has a unique profile of strengths and weaknesses is central to The Children's Annex philosophy. Children's Annex staff members hold high expectations for students. Our curriculum is completely individualized to reach each child's highest potential. We offer academic instruction, when appropriate, in language arts and mathematics, augmenting more traditional instructional material with hands-on, multi-sensory learning. Individualized and class-wide communication and motivational systems reduce frustration and encourage each student's best effort. When appropriate, life skills instruction is tailored for children's needs. All teaching is designed to promote student generalization into the home and other community settings. At our Kingston site, highly staffed classrooms follow two instructional models:The Social and Academic Learning Program and The Intensive Learning Program.

The Social and Academic Learning Program

Students attending this Kingston-based program are between the ages of 5 and 12.They may have suspected average intelligence and many age appropriate skills in academic areas, adaptive living, or communication. Students may be eligible for this program if they show:

  • Extreme activity or a short attention span
  • Difficulty with social relationships
  • Delays in pragmatic language development
  • Trouble following directions
  • Behavior problems
  • Learning disabilities

Small classes taught by a special educator and an assistant teacher offer individual and small group instruction with individualized academic instruction and social skills training.
