The Children's Annex is staffed by many professionals collaborating in a transdisciplinary format. We recognize that the complex needs of our students require competence, creativity and commitment from the professionals who serve them.

  • Students are taught by special educators with the support of trained assistants in highly staffed, well equipped classrooms customized to meet each student's needs
  • Speech and language therapists and pathologists provide individual or group therapy, classroom consultation, as well as evaluation of students and the design of individualized communication systems that may employ assistive technology and other augmentative communication techniques.
  • Occupational and physical therapists offer evaluations, as well as ongoing treatment in individual or group therapy and classroom consultation. Sessions may focus on fine and gross motor skills, sensory integrative processing, positioning, oral motor development, monitoring adaptive equipment and prevocational groups.
  • School psychologists contribute to program planning, complete functional behavioral assessments, design behavioral interventions and home-based programs, evaluate student functioning in cognitive and emotional areas and offer individual and group counseling services with other Children's Annex professionals.
  • Adaptive physical education teachers build teamwork while improving coordination and motor skills. Instruction occurs in center and community based setting. Recreational activities like swimming, bowling and bike riding are emphasized.
  • School nurses monitor and administer prescribed treatments, consult on health issues and network with the medical community. A consultant psychiatrist is available for treatment collaboration.
  • Family service workers coordinate student programming with the family, school, service providers and the community

As a day program, close family involvement is important to The Children's Annex philosophy. Parents and guardians are considered partners in the development of each child's educational plan. Goals for family involvement include enhancing family strengths, increasing family support networks and developing children's community-based skills and abilities. Our innovative family centered services are extensive and can be individualized for each care-giving situation. A family service coordinator is assigned to each student and serves as the home-to-school liaison. Family services may include:

  • Regular written communication
  • Regular telephone contact
  • Transdisciplinary conferences
  • Parent workshops
  • Parent support groups with child care
  • Community referrals
  • Medical management
  • Classroom and home visits
  • Home-based behavioral and learning programs
  • Sibling groups and summer programs

The Children's Annex provides support services to young children in their homes and other community settings. Special education, speech and language therapy and counseling can be provided in daycare, preschools and family homes. Collaborative efforts between regular and special education professionals can assist children with special needs to successfully remain in their neighborhood programs.

For young children with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), we can design home programs employing the principles of applied behavioral analysis. These programs utilize discrete trial teaching as an instructional tool to teach a variety of skills within the home.
